FilePop privacy

Last updated: May 2026

FilePop is a menu-bar file browser for macOS. It does not collect, transmit, or store any personal information about you.

What FilePop reads from your computer

Only the folders you ask it to browse. The Mac App Store version is sandboxed: on first launch it asks you, via the standard macOS Open Folder dialog, to grant access to a single root (typically your home folder). FilePop reads files and folders beneath that root only, and only when you navigate to them. macOS may additionally prompt you the first time you visit a TCC-protected folder like Documents or Desktop — that prompt is the operating system's, not the app's.

What FilePop does with your files

Whatever you tell it to. Selecting a file in FilePop does nothing on its own. Dragging a file out of FilePop hands it to the destination app the same way Finder would. Dropping a file into a folder copies or moves it (the same as Finder, with ⌘ for copy). Hitting Space invokes Quick Look, which is a system service. Nothing leaves your Mac.

What FilePop sends over the network

The Mac App Store version: nothing. There are no analytics, no telemetry, no error reporting, no “phone home”, no advertising, no tracking. The app does not initiate network connections.

The direct-download version (from bendansby.com/apps/filepop) checks for software updates by fetching a public appcast.xml file from this domain. No identifiers are sent with the request.

What FilePop stores locally

Your preferences (window size, sort order, granted-folder bookmark, recent paths) are stored in your Mac's standard preferences database (UserDefaults) inside the app's container. Nothing is shared with iCloud or any other service.

Third parties

None. FilePop does not embed any third-party SDKs, analytics frameworks, or trackers.

Children

FilePop is a productivity utility. It is not directed at children, and it does not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age.
